Winterquist Elementary School

Winterquist Elementary School is a public preK-6 school serving a student population of approximately 640. It is staffed by 63 certified and non certified staff committed to excellence in education through up-to-date teaching strategies, the digital engagement initiative, and a positive discipline program. The school's curriculum and instruction is aligned with the Minnesota State Standards.

Winterquist has 28 classroom teachers with 4 sections per grade. The school has a full-time principal, media specialist, counselor, nurse, and psychologist. It also provides specialists in music, art, physical education, and Title I.

Special education services are provided for specific learning disabilities, speech/language therapy, emotional behavior disorders, occupational/physical therapy, mild/moderate/severe mental impairments, early childhood special education.  Other services are provided by the Cloquet Area Special Education Cooperative. The district also provides an enrichment coordinator, school-age daycare, and Early Childhood Family Education.

Winterquist was awarded
the Minnesota Elementary School Principals' Association's "School of Excellence Award" in 1991, and the Minnesota Department of Education Reward School for the last three years in a row. Winterquist takes pride in its well behaved students and supportive parents and community.

Enrichment Opportunities

I am asked quite often what enrichment opportunities we have for our students. We send home notes and list events in the school paper, but I know sometimes those come at times we are busy as parents. Here is a list of activities and programs that we offer.

  • Math Masters - grades 5-6
  • Spelling Bee - grades 5-8
  • Geography Bee - grades 5-8
  • Knowledge Bowl - grades 5-12


Parent Involvement
