Position Title: Custodian/Maintenance
Department:              Maintenance
Reports To:                Building & Grounds Supervisor, Principals, Superintendent

SUMMARY:   Keeps the district’s school buildings in such a state of operating excellence that they present no problems or interruptions to the educational program.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIESOther duties may be assigned

 

  • Assists in maintaining seasonal grounds work (snow, lawn)
  • Cleans and preserves designated spaces, equipment etc. in the building as assigned
  • Restocks disposable items and provides Building & Grounds Supervisor with inventory usage and data
  • Assists visiting public utilizing the facilities with directions within building and in obtaining and setting up needed equipment
  • Maintains building and grounds security in the building each school day
  • Performs ongoing preventative maintenance and minor repair on plumbing, custodial equipment, ventilation, building structure and hardware
  • Position may require welding skills
  • Summer maintenance and cleaning includes but is not limited to:                        Shampoo carpet, hard surface floors stripping, scrubbing, rewaxing,                        wash walls, high dusting, painting, repair of furniture and various other building fixtures           

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:  To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.  The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.

A Class II Boiler License

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE: High school diploma or general education degree (GED)

LANGUAGE SKILLS: Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.  Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.  Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS: Ability to add and subtract two digit numbers and to multiply and divide with 10s and 100s.  Ability to perform these operations using units of American money and weight measurement, volume and distance.

REASONING ABILITY: Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.  Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES:  Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, staff and the community.  Ability to perform duties with awareness of all district requirements and Board of Education policies.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:  The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. 

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand; walk; use hands and finger to handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; and talk or hear.  The employee frequently is required to reach with hands and arms.  The employee is occasionally required to sit.  The employee frequently must squat, stoop or kneel, reach above the head and reach forward.  The employee continuously uses hand strength to grasp tools and climbs on to ladders.  The employee will frequently bend or twist at the neck and trunk more than the average person while performing the duties of this job.

 The employee must be able to work from ladders, lifts and scaffolding.  The employee must have the ability to use backpack vacuum cleaner for long periods of time.  The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds such as cleaning supplies, pails and unloading trucks.  Occasionally the employee will lift and/or move up to 90 pounds such as salt and bulk furniture.  The employee will sometimes push/pull items such as tables, bleachers, scrubbing machines.  Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

 WORK ENVIRONMENT:  The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works indoors and will occasionally work outdoors.  The employee will work near or with moving mechanical equipment.  The employee may occasionally work with toxic or caustic chemicals such as petroleum products, degreasers, and sprays.  The employee must be able to meet deadlines with severe time constraints.  The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.

Position Purpose:  To provide students and staff with a safe, attractive, comfortable,                                         and efficient place to learn, play and develop.
Reportability:          Head Custodian; Principal; Superintendent
Dimensions:             Esko School District, parents, community, teachers, administration                                      peers.
Working Environment:        Frequent interruptions.  Frequent bending, twisting, reaching and   lifting up to  fifty (50) pounds.  Put up with unpleasant odors and   fumes.  Daily use of cleaning supplies and/or chemicals with safety first.  Work in temperature changes.  Work at heights.  Work  indoors and outdoors.  Work with appropriate lawn and garden equipment.
Job Responsibilities: 
1. Help with building, grounds and equipment for safety.  Inform Head Custodian as  problems arise.
2.  Be responsible to direct the activities for the evening shifts as information is passed on      from the Head Custodian.
3. Assist visiting public utilizing the facility with directions and with obtaining and setting up equipment.
4.  Assist contractors as needed.
5.  Conduct ground maintenance including weed trimming, landscaping, snow removal,         raking and similar tasks, using non-motorized equipment.
6. Unload trucks, work in shop and perform other required miscellaneous tasks.
7.  Vacuum, sweep, scrub, and/or clean classrooms, hallways, cafeteria, gym and locker          rooms, washrooms, and boiler room.
8. Set up/clean up equipment for sporting events, concerts and other meetings or special        events.
9. Be responsible to set up equipment and make rooms ready for community education          activities.
10.  Perform other related work as apparent or assigned by Head Custodian or Superintendent.
11.  Report any maintenance needs to supervisor.
12.  Use appropriate cleaner fluids/supplies.
13.  Refinishing floors.
14.  Maintain building and grounds security.

Relationships Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
1.         Certified of good health; signed by a licensed physician.
2.         Ability to read basic operating instructions and write reports.
3.         Demonstrate aptitude for successful completion of the tasks assigned.
4.         Knowledge of fire alarm system or ability to learn.
5.         Ability to work and solve problems without supervision.
6.         General knowledge of all building systems, including water, fire, safety, sprinkler, electrical, plumbing and heating.

Problem Solving:
The custodian/cleaner person must use the best communication techniques and etiquette in dealing with clientele, who can be difficult at times and/or require special arrangements because of their personal or vocational disabilities, in order to ascertain problems and/or concerns and to deal with those problems and/or concerns appropriately.

 COOL KIDS - SCHOOL AGE CARE PROGRAM ASSISTANT

General Position Description:

Assist Cool Kid’s Coordinator in providing a quality school age child age care program.  Program Assistant helps provide activities that offer a fun, safe, caring environment that fosters recreational, social, educational and developmentally appropriate experiences that compliment a child’s school day.

 Education/Licensure Needed:
            High School Diploma
            AA Degree or 1040 hours of experience working with School Age Children

 Job Qualifications:

  • CPR & First Aid certification (recommended)
  • Successful experience in working with school age children.
  • Successful experience working with parents and co-workers.
  • Ability to communicate verbally and in writing.
  • Able to handle activities with groups of children and develop positive relationships       with them.
  • Able to handle lifting and bending, and may spend time sitting on the floor or child sized furniture.

 Essential Duties (included but not limited to):

  1. Responsible for room preparation, project materials, art and craft supplies, toys and resources, and snack according to the plan for the day.  Works with the team in developing these daily plans.
  2. Interact with participating parents and children as they arrive, and actively participate with children in daily activities.
  3. Follow daily school schedule which includes brining children to lunch, preschool class, and playground.
  4. The Program Assistant will be working in a busy and occasionally noisy environment. There may be a number of activities and situations happening at once, and the Program Assistant will have to supervise all children at all times and ensure that children are involved in safe and appropriate activities.
  5. Help with preparation, activities, and clean-up for various family events, community events and fundraisers as assigned.
