  Primary Objective of the Position:

Under the direction of an Occupational Therapist the COTA shall provide therapy services to student on Individual Educational Plans, IFSP’s and IIIP’s to the assigned school district or districts.  These services shall include (but not limited to) assessment, treatment of fine motor functioning, sensory, perceptual motor skills, proper positioning, adapted feeding programs, assistive technology, activities of daily living for school related tasks, construct/monitor use of adaptive devices and consultation/education to paraprofessionals, teachers, parents and other related team members.

 Job Description:

Under the direction of the Registered Occupational Therapist                                                        

A. Assists in the assessment of fine motor, oral motor, perceptual motor and sensorimotor function.

B. Administers and scores standardized assessments within the school environment and/or community

C. Reports and confers with the occupational therapist any observable data that relates to student performance (i.e. assessments, IEP, progress, interventions).

D. With the occupational therapist, assists in the development of Individual Educational Plan (IEP) goals and objectives, thereafter providing intervention services to students as established

E. Participates in conjunction with the OTR, in IEP conferences, CST’s communication with parents, teachers, paraprofessionals and other related staff

F. Gather and relay information from Child Study Team and pre referral meeting to OTR     

G. Provides follow through and reinforcement of other educational goals and objectives as they relate to functional fine/perceptual motor, sensorimotor and/or self care skills

H. Administer transdisciplinary intervention with other team members:  speech, physical therapy, teachers, etc.

I. When appropriate, makes home visits (homebound) and reports to OTR regarding student’s functional abilities within the home environment as it relates to his/her school performance

J. Administrative duties:  meeting every 6th visit face to face with OTR and child on children eligible for Medical Assistance Reimbursement and maintaining documentation for billing, maintains written records that document therapy sessions, provide updated information on student progress and meet with OTR every 2 weeks for consultation (per MN state licensure)

K. May provide fieldwork experience to occupational therapy assistant students.

L.Provides in-service education to other team members, parents, or community per requested by or with an OTR

M. Attends continuing education and in-service training as required to maintain current techniques and procedures as required by the school district and the state of Minnesota.

N.  Implement therapeutic programs and treatment which include, but are not limited to: positioning, mobility development, adaptive equipment, and feeding.

O. Maintain equipment and supplies in accordance with departmental and legal procedures, to assure availability to therapists and effective departmental operation.

P. Design, construct, and monitor student’s use of adaptive equipment, orthotic devices, wheelchairs, and mobility and positioning devices.

Q. Establish and maintain effective working relationships and work as a team member.

General Position Description:

Assist Cool Kid’s Coordinator in providing a quality school age child age care program.  Program Assistant helps provide activities that offer a fun, safe, caring environment that fosters recreational, social, educational and developmentally appropriate experiences that compliment a child’s school day.

 Education/Licensure Needed:
            High School Diploma
            AA Degree or 1040 hours of experience working with School Age Children

 Job Qualifications:

  • CPR & First Aid certification (recommended)
  • Successful experience in working with school age children.
  • Successful experience working with parents and co-workers.
  • Ability to communicate verbally and in writing.
  • Able to handle activities with groups of children and develop positive relationships       with them.
  • Able to handle lifting and bending, and may spend time sitting on the floor or child sized furniture.

 Essential Duties (included but not limited to):

  1. Responsible for room preparation, project materials, art and craft supplies, toys and resources, and snack according to the plan for the day.  Works with the team in developing these daily plans.
  2. Interact with participating parents and children as they arrive, and actively participate with children in daily activities.
  3. Follow daily school schedule which includes brining children to lunch, preschool class, and playground.
  4. The Program Assistant will be working in a busy and occasionally noisy environment. There may be a number of activities and situations happening at once, and the Program Assistant will have to supervise all children at all times and ensure that children are involved in safe and appropriate activities.
  5. Help with preparation, activities, and clean-up for various family events, community events and fundraisers as assigned.

  • Keep coordinator updated on interesting/valuable program item/ideas to expand existing classroom materials or lending library resources.
  • Responsible for the ordered arrangement, appearance, décor and learning environment of the classroom/parent education area.  Help Child Educator and families understand the routine for children to follow.
  • Take time to personally know each parent and child.  Be sensitive to the separation process and follow program philosophy on separating.  Meet individually with parents as needed.  Be aware and alert to each child’s safety and parent’s comfort level.
  • Serve as a model for parents when working with young children and share with parents child development ideas verbally of through handouts.
  • Make referrals, as necessary, to program coordinator for special assistance or community resource information.
  • Assist in outreach and public relations activities as needed.
  • Responsible for attending and working at designated family events, community events and fundraisers.
